about

Jeenaki is one of two pieces by the great “elder Statesman” of Sudanese music Abdel Gadir Salim (1946), which we have added to our set especially for this project.
Jeenaki is from his album “Popular music of Sudan” and it uses the image of geese returning to the desert as a metaphor for displaced people.
Salim although born in Kordofan trained in both European and Arabic music at the Institute of Drama and Music in Khartoum and Jeenaki makes use of an Arabic maqam instead of the more common pentatonic scale.
The words of Jeenaki were written by Fidaili Jamma.
